“You were made to shine. But you are not the light source.”
Did you know the moon is not a light source? I know. It looks like one. On a clear night it can be so bright you can walk around without a flashlight. But the moon doesn’t produce a single ounce of light on its own. It’s basically a giant mirror, reflecting the sun’s light to the earth. The glow we admire at night isn’t the moon’s light at all. It’s a reflection. And that might be the most freeing picture of your purpose you’ll ever see. And that’s a powerful picture of what Jesus is asking us to do with our lives.
Your Job Is to Reflect
Many of us feel pressure to be the light: to be impressive, to be put together, to illuminate every room we walk into. But look at how Jesus puts it in Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG): you’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept, and He’s not hiding you under a bucket. He’s putting you on a light stand. But notice what He is not saying. He is not saying, “Go manufacture light.” He’s saying, “Shine.” The word “bear” in light-bearer means to carry the weight of, to support. Your assignment is to carry the light, not create it.
You Ain’t All That (But You’re All His)
Here’s the first stop on the road to shining: check your ego at the door and remind yourself that “you ain’t all that…But you are all His. And that makes you all that.” We have to keep this in proper perspective. I am nothing without Jesus. Without Him, I can’t be a light bearer, because it’s impossible to bear light without light. When we get these two twisted, we start believing we’re responsible for creating the light we carry. We’re not. Our responsibility is simply to bear it.
Stay Connected to the Vine
Jesus gave us another picture in John 15:5-8 (MSG): “I am the Vine, you are the branches.” A branch can’t create fruit. It can only bear the fruit the vine produces. Cut off from the vine, you’re just a stick looking for something to do. That’s exhausting. And plenty of us are living it: striving to glow, burning out, wondering why the light feels dim. The fix isn’t trying harder. It’s staying connected.
We Have His DNA
Isaiah 60:1-3 (KJV) says, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.” Notice the order. The light comes first. Then we arise and shine. It’s impossible to be like God without God. But we have His DNA. And 1 Peter 2:9-10 (TPT) reminds us that He called us out of darkness into His marvelous light so that we would broadcast His glorious wonders throughout the world. You were chosen, set apart, and drenched in mercy for exactly this.
It’s Not About Us
Here’s the beautiful part: the more light we reflect, the more He’s seen. When we reflect well, nobody walks away talking about the mirror. They talk about the Source. Read that again! It’s all about Jesus. He is the light of the world. He’s the reason we have air to breathe, blood in our veins, life in our bodies. He gave us everything because we mean everything to Him. So let’s stop carrying pressure that was never ours to carry.
Tighten Your Bulb
We have light. We just don’t always release it or let it be seen. Sometimes the problem isn’t darkness. It’s a loose bulb. So this week, let’s tighten up:
- Spend a few minutes with Jesus before you perform for anyone.
Name one place you’ve been striving to produce light, and So Shine
There is a world around you that needs to see what God’s goodness looks like. Sometimes that looks like courage. Sometimes it’s kindness. Sometimes it’s truth. Sometimes it’s generosity. Sometimes it’s choosing integrity when nobody is watching. Sometimes it’s loving someone who doesn’t expect to be loved. Sometimes it’s simply being the person who reminds someone else that they aren’t alone. Your life can point people somewhere. You can show the way to the Way. You can live in truth because His truth is your life. But remember: You don’t have to become the source. You don’t have to carry the pressure of producing something that only God can produce. You don’t have to shine by your own strength. Stay connected to Jesus.
Let Him fill you, shape you, love you, and live through you. And then…shine. Not so people see how amazing you are. But so they can see how good He is.
Say It With Us
I am a light-bearer.
I show the way to the Way.
I live my life in truth.
His truth is my life.
I am a reflection.
My job is to reflect His light.
That’s what I do.
You were made to shine. For a time such as this.
