"This Christian life isn't about trying harder. It's about staying connected."
In a world that constantly pushes us toward performance, productivity, and proving ourselves, it’s easy to bring that same mindset into our relationship with God. We can start to believe that being “aligned” with Him depends on how much we pray, how perfectly we behave, or how many spiritual boxes we check. Pastor Ayana Abakah reminded us of a powerful truth: our relationship with God was never meant to be about performance, it was meant to be about connection.
The Picture Jesus Gave Us
In John 15, Jesus gives us a powerful illustration of our relationship with Him.
“I am the vine and you are the branches… the one who abides in me bears much fruit.”
— John 15:5
Branches don’t strain or struggle to produce fruit. They simply stay connected to the vine. Their job is to display fruit. In the same way, our lives produce spiritual fruit not through striving, but through remaining connected to Christ. When we abide in Him, fruitfulness becomes natural.
Alignment Happens Through Connection
One of the most important reminders from the message was this: Alignment is maintained through connection, not performance. The goal of our faith isn’t to work harder for God. The goal is to remain close to Him.
Pastor Ayana shared a few practical ways we maintain that connection.
1. Dive Intentionally Into the Word
Reading Scripture isn’t just about checking off a daily devotional. It’s about allowing God to speak to us and shape how we see ourselves. 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that Scripture is God-breathed and equips us for every assignment in life. Sometimes that means slowing down, reading different translations, and asking God for understanding. The Word isn’t just information — it’s transformation.
2. Speak God’s Word Over Your Life
Life will always try to define you through circumstances, mistakes, or comparison. But God’s Word reminds us who we truly are. Speaking Scripture over your life aligns your heart with truth instead of fear or insecurity. Remember, words carry power. Both to build and to destroy. As Proverbs reminds us, kind words heal and help, but destructive words can wound deeply. What we say matters.
3. Pray in the Holy Spirit
Pastor Ayana described praying in the Spirit as our direct lifeline to God. Romans 8:26-27 reminds us that when we don’t even know what to pray, the Spirit helps us and intercedes for us. In those moments when words fail, God still hears us. And He meets us right there.
4. Guard What You Consume
What we allow into our minds and hearts shapes our spiritual lives more than we often realize. Music, shows, social media, conversations… they all influence our perspective. Proverbs 4 encourages us to guard our hearts carefully, because everything in life flows from it. If we want to stay aligned with God, we must also be mindful of what we allow to shape our thinking.
Abiding Is Simpler Than We Think
One of the most freeing reminders from the message was this: God is a gentleman. Having a relationship with Him was never meant to be complicated. Grace makes it simple. Sometimes we’re the ones who complicate it by trying to add our own effort to what Jesus has already finished. But the gospel reminds us of this truth: Jesus plus nothing equals everything.
When we stay connected to Him, everything else flows from that relationship.
